Emancipation Day

On August 1, Canadians are invited to observe Emancipation Day, which celebrates and honours the strength and perseverance of Black communities in Canada. It marks the actual day in 1834 that the Slavery Abolition Act of 1833 came into effect in many countries that were part of the British Empire.  In 2021, the House of Commons voted unanimously to officially designate August 1 as Emancipation Day in Canada.

UPEI Men鈥檚 Basketball Panther Kamari Scott honoured with Rory Beck Award after stellar career

The UPEI Department of Athletics and Recreation is proud to announce that UPEI Men鈥檚 Basketball standout Kamari Scott is the 2025 recipient of the Rory Beck Outstanding Academic and Athletic Leadership Award.

Scott received the prestigious honour during UPEI鈥檚 convocation ceremony for the faculties of Business and Sustainable Design Engineering on May 14. He graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.

President's Town Hall: UPEI Action Plan Update

The next President's Town Hall will feature the progress report on Year 0 and Year 1 of the UPEI Action Plan鈥攁nd the Year 2 Implementation Plan.

Kate Richard, Jane Ngobia, and Wendy Rodgers will present and discuss the activities completed in years 0 and 1, and some of the bigger implementation plans for Year 2.  

This Town Hall will be open to the broader UPEI community, including partners from government, members of our Board of Governors, and other relevant groups.

What motivated you to pursue a graduate degree at UPEI? Why did you choose to study here?

I live in Stratford, grew up on the Island, and wanted to be in a place where my research could give back to the community. I鈥檝e had excellent experiences at both UPEI (I graduated in 2024 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology) and Health PEI, so pursuing a Master鈥檚 degree that allowed me to work with both of these organizations was a significant motivator.

Provincial ADHD program at UPEI transitions to Health PEI

The provincial ADHD program operated by the 91福利在线你懂的 (UPEI) transitioned to Health PEI, effective April 1, 2025.

鈥淭his milestone represents a significant advancement in the program鈥檚 journey, ensuring ongoing support and services for Islanders living with ADHD,鈥 said Marilyn Barrett, Director of Distributed Medical Education and Family Medicine, and former director of the UPEI ADHD program.

UPEI graduate students present research at 2025 3-Minute Thesis event

Building social awareness in robots, the impacts of physical activity for persons with Alzheimer鈥檚 disease, and data solutions for hidden potato crop stresses were the focus of prize-winning 3-Minute Thesis (3MT) presentations by UPEI graduate students on May 7, 2025.

The 3MT competition challenges graduate students to explain their thesis within three minutes and in a format that a general audience can understand. The winner earns a place at the regional 3MT competition in St. John鈥檚, Newfoundland and Labrador, on June 4, and the top three presenters receive prize money.
