Education Day

Students, staff, and faculty are invited to participate in Education Day 2013, taking place on Thursday, September 26th. Join members of the Student Union for a BBQ at 11:30 am, outside of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre. A Society Fair will take place in the concourse of the W.A. Murphy Student Centre from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The day will end off with trivia for students, staff and faculty in McMillan Hall at 8:00 pm. Come to win some fantastic prizes and learn about post-secondary education!

Mehregan Celebration

Mehregan or Jashn-e Mehr (Mehr Festival) is a Zoroastrian and Persian (Iranian) festival to honor the Yazata of "Mehr", which is responsible for friendship, affection and love. It is also widely referred to as Persian Festival of Autumn. There will be music, dance, and more! Light refreshments will be served. Tickets will be available to purchase on Monday, September 23 at Brits Fish and Chips (41 University Avenue), PEI Photo Lab (55 Queen Street) or you can email us at iraniansociety@upeisu.ca. Tickets are $6 in advance and $9 at the door (upon availability).

Introduction to Japanese Pop Culture

The Land of the Rising Sun has long been associated with ancient culture and rich traditions. Yet beyond tea ceremonies, Zen gardens, and the bushido spirit, there exists a modern world filled with manga, anime, video games and innumerable aspects of Japanese pop culture that cater to the taste of today鈥檚 youth. Join Mr. Tatsuo Arai, Consul General of Japan at Montreal, for a special public talk on 鈥淛apanese Pop Culture." It is this unbelievably popular trend that Consul General Arai aims to explore during his lecture; everything from the birth of Japanese manga and the masterpieces of Studio Ghibli to the colourful combinations of cute boxed lunches, the latest fashion trends, and beyond. By examining the various characteristics and peculiarities that have breathed life into this globalized cultural phenomenon, long-time fans and newcomers alike will be fascinated by Japanese pop culture鈥檚 undeniable charm. This event is open to the public and all are welcome to attend.

2013-2014 Trudeau Lecture Series: Picking Up the Pieces

In the first Trudeau Lecture to come to the 91福利在线你懂的, beloved M茅tis author and playwright Maria Campbell, 2012 visiting Trudeau Fellow, talks about the connection between her volunteering, her academic career, and her work in literature, theatre, and video to end violence against women in her lecture entitled: "Picking Up The Pieces - Seeking Out The Roots Of Violence Against Indigenous Women." Growing up in a Road Allowance M茅tis community in northern Saskatchewan, Dr. Campbell witnessed the power that women in her community exercised, as well as the violence they experienced. A lifelong student of Indigenous oral history, she will speak to what she has learned of traditional ways that fostered respect and authority for Aboriginal women, and on how colonization disrupted those ways and introduced gendered violence. Dr. Campbell will also describe how she is using her Trudeau Foundation fellowship to explore archival and secondary source material to support what she knows about the roots of violence against Aboriginal women. Her lecture will cover how she came to look for these 鈥減ieces of ourselves left behind鈥� in documentary sources, and how observations about Aboriginal women from a Euro/Western lens can be re-visited to assist Aboriginal women鈥檚 activism today. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served.
