Award-winning documentary "Bluefin" to be shown at UPEI

Island filmmaker John Hopkins will be on the Island to introduce his multi-award-winning film, Bluefin, at UPEI on on March 25. Filmed in the 鈥渢una capital of the world鈥, North Lake, PEI, the documentary explores the baffling mystery of a sudden abundance of tuna off the shores of eastern Prince Edward Island, despite scientific assessments claiming tuna stocks are substantially depleted. With stunning cinematography, Hopkins documents this mystery, exploring the complex issues at the heart of the story. Underlying the documentary is a shared and passionate concern for the fate of the giant bluefin tuna. The film has received rave reviews from audiences around the world, and has been awarded prizes at the 2017 Santa Barbara International Film Festival and the 2017 International Ocean Film Festival, and the 2016 Lunenburg DocFest. This screening is being hosted by the UPEI Environmental Society and Save our Seas and Shores PEI and Cinema Politica Charlottetown. Soup for the Soul

Our last soup event for the semester is Tuesday March 20 2018. This month our Soup for the Soul event will be hosted by the UPEI 4th year Quantity Food Production Class and features chicken noodle and vegetarian pizza inspired soup!

MA Island Studies Thesis Defence

The Faculty of Arts, Island Studies wishes to announce that Erin Rowan, a Master鈥檚 student, will be defending her thesis entitled, 鈥淚sle of Hunger, Isle of Pain: Islandness, Memory, and Landscape of the Great Famine in Cahersiveen and Valentia Island, Co. Kerry, Ireland鈥. It will take place Friday, March 23rd, 9:00-11:00am in Rm. 335 SDUMain Bldg. All are welcome.

AVC Wildlife Service hosts public lecture and fundraiser April 4

The AVC Wildlife Service and Wildlife Club are celebrating National Wildlife Week with a public lecture in Lecture Theatre A, Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI, on Wednesday, April 4, 2018, at 7 p.m. National Wildlife Week, which takes place from April 8鈥14 this year, is a program of the Canadian Wildlife Federation that celebrates Canada鈥檚 natural heritage and the importance of its conservation. Fiep de Bie, technician with the AVC Wildlife Service, will give a lecture called 鈥淚sland wild birds: Monitoring their health and well-being.鈥 She will reflect on the outbreak of trichomonosis in finches in the summer of 2017 and address the question of whether wild birds should be fed. Other issues related to wild birds on Prince Edward Island will also be discussed. There will be a fundraiser for the AVC Wildlife Service, including a silent auction of art, a raffle, and the sale of cupcakes. Proceeds will go towards the care of wildlife submitted to the service. Everyone is welcome. Admission is free.

Retirement Reception for Cheryl Gaudet Cheryl Gaudet will officially retire from UPEI on April 3 after 30 years of service to the University, most recently with the SSDE. The engineering faculty and staff would like to invite you to a retirement get-together for Cheryl on Wednesday, April 4, 3:30-4:30 pm in the SSDE building at the top of the Learning Stairs.
