Join us Friday, October 10 at 5pm for the first Graduate Student Pub at the Wave! It鈥檚 been a long week. You鈥檝e been working hard. Come out and meet some of the other graduate students on campus who make this place tick. Come for the camaraderie, stay for the Three Minute Thesis Open Mic! 3MT is an international competition where graduate students deliver lay-summaries of their research in less than three minutes. It鈥檚 fast past, hectic, and a lot of fun. We鈥檒l be participating in the formal competition this spring, but if you want a bit of practice, we鈥檒l give you a shot! If you鈥檇 like to participate, email datkinson@upei.ca. We鈥檒l start the competition around 6pm. We鈥檒l supply some great prizes! It's all in good fun, and great practice for the spring. Staff and faculty are encouraged to share the following scholarship opportunities with students and to consider students to nominate. *John J. Sark Memorial Scholarship The scholarship program was established in the name of distinguished Mi'kmaq Islander John James Sark in September 2009. He earned a post-secondary education at St. Dunstan's University, and was the Island's first Mi'kmaq teacher. It will be awarded to aboriginal students who have made a contribution to their First Nations, Inuit or Metis community, have commitment to their field of study, a strong academic performance and financial need. More details and application forms can be found online: *UPEI MBA Healthy Living Leadership Award This award was established in April 2011 by students in the UPEI Master of Business Administration program. It is well recognized that healthy living can lead to better health. Yet, MBA students also recognize that maintaining a successful healthy living strategy is never easy - let alone doing so while managing the added demands of an MBA program. It will be awarded to a student entering the second year of the Master of Business Administration Program at UPEI who has made an extra effort to maintain and promote balanced healthy living, and who, in the process, sets an example of community leadership. Dr. Bourlaye Fofana, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada will present 鈥淗ow gene discovery meets plant and bioreactor genetic resources development鈥� at 12:30 pm in Duffy Science Centre, Room 204. All are welcome to attend. 鈥�

Fany Marron, Department of Pathology and Microbiology will present a seminar called "CAR-bacillus-like organism in cats with pneumoina" on Tuesday, October 14 at 3:30 pm in AVC Lecture Theatre C. Everyone is welcome to attend.

The UPEI Student Union will host a Shinerama spaghetti dinner event on Monday, October 20 from 5:00-7:00 pm. Tickets are available for $10 for those interested and will be sold in the UPEISU beginning Friday, October 10 from 9:30-11:00 am, and from October 14-17 from 11:00 am-2:00 pm. Gather your friends and come and join the Psychology department for our first presentation in the Fiona Papps Colloquium Series taking place this Friday, October 10 at 1:30 pm in Memorial 215. The topic of the day "Wicked questions, academic activism, and community based participatory action research: Lessons from the field" will be presented by Dr. Colleen MacQuarrie. All are invited and welcome to attend.

The UPEI Hockey Panthers are proud to team up with Red Shores Racetrack & Casino for a Night at the Track on Thursday October 9. The evening will feature a meet & greet, interviews, prize giveaways, and some of the players will be teaming up with a horse and driver on selected races. A prominent American researcher in the field of addictions treatment is coming to Prince Edward Island to give a public talk, and to discuss ways of importing her web-based treatment methods to the Island鈥檚 healthcare system. Dr. Kathleen Carroll is a Professor of Psychiatry from the Yale School of Medicine. The public is welcome to her talk on Tuesday, October 7 at 6:00 pm in the Alex H. MacKinnon Auditorium, room 242 of UPEI鈥檚 Don and Marion McDougall Hall. Dr. Carroll is best known for her work in computer-based training for cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT4CBT, which has received multiple awards and recognitions for its success. CBT4CBT is being implemented within the U.S. healthcare system and has been shown in several sites to nearly double the improvement of treatment success for patients struggling with addictions. Dr. Carroll comes to Prince Edward Island as a guest of Dr. Juergen Krause, Dean of the School of Business and Director of UPEI鈥檚 Centre for Health and Biotech Management Research (CHBMR). Dr. Carroll鈥檚 talk will offer more information about this new treatment option for Prince Edward Island and Canada, and will give the public an opportunity to ask questions to learn more.
