Health Career Showcase for UPEI Students
The PEI Department of Health and Wellness in conjunction with the PEI Health Sector Council are hosting the 6th Annual Health Career Showcase for UPEI Students on October 27, 2015. The purpose of the career fair event is to expose UPEI students to the a variety of health careers on PEI by providing them the opportunity to converse directly with health professionals.
 
Last year there were 35 health professionals representing over 20 health careers. Example of some health professionals in attendance: Medical Lab Technologist, Pharmacist, Physiotherapist, Physician, to name a few.

UPEI Halloween Decorating Contest

Parking notice
PEI Facilities Management has recently acquired a limited number of parking permits available for the CARI MacLauchlan Arena parking lot and are offering them to those who are currently parked in general lots and would like to relocate. The CARI arena parking lot typically has spaces available during the day during peak parking lot usage times. 
 
If you are interested in moving to this lot, please bring your current parking permit to Security Services located in the Central Utility Building. We will exchange your permit for a proximity card to access the CARI arena lot gates.
Chemistry Day, October 24

On Saturday October 24, 2015 from 10-11am, the Chem 483 class will be hosting a Chemistry Day. There will be a variety of demonstrations from the chemical chameleon to growing silver trees. All are welcome to attend.

Winter鈥檚 Tales Authors Reading Series presents Joan Clark
Celebrated and popular Canadian novelist Joan Clark will give a public reading and sign books on October 28th at 7:30 p.m. in the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. A native of Nova Scotia, Clark has lived in Newfoundland since the 1980s.  
 
Her reading is part of the Winter鈥檚 Tales Authors鈥� Reading Series and is sponsored by the UPEI Faculty of Arts and The Canada Council for the Arts, with the Art Gallery鈥檚 collaboration.

Submission of Research Ethics Board Protocols
Ethics protocols that involve 鈥榤ore than minimal risk鈥� must be reviewed by the full UPEI Research Ethics Board. The next deadline for submitting these protocols is Friday November 6 2015. They will be reviewed at the November meeting.  Protocols involving 鈥榤ore than minimal risk鈥� that are received after November 6 will be reviewed at the December meeting.
 
Other ethics protocol submissions, including new applications that do not involve 鈥榤ore than minimal risk鈥�, renewals, and amendments may be submitted at any time. They will be sent for delegated review as soon as all necessary forms are received.
 
Please ensure that you download and use the current forms from . Use Adobe Reader to complete forms.

GroupWise maintenance this weekend
Please be advised that the UPEI GroupWise email system will be unavailable from 12:00 pm on Saturday, October 17, until 3:00 pm the same day.
 
This outage is required to perform maintenance and updates to several components of the GroupWise email system.
 
Emails being sent to a GroupWise account during this outage will be held and delivered when maintenance is completed. ITSS apologizes for any inconvenience this outage may cause and encourages clients not to use their email during this period for time sensitive conversations.

The next UPEI on-site training session in animal use and care will be held....

This will be a 3 hour training session with handouts, based on CCAC Recommended Syllabus (exam included).
                                                                                                                       
The Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC) requires that all personnel involved with the use of animals in research, teaching, testing and service take this course.  (A refresher course is required every 5 years.)
           
Please notify me by e-mail animalcare@upei.ca by 12:00 noon on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 if you or any of your staff will be attending this session.

Molecular and Macromolecular Sciences Seminar Program - October 14, 2015

Krista Gill, PhD student will present a seminar on Wednesday, October 14, 2015 at 12:30 pm. The presentation is entitled "Discovery of Natural Products from Actinobacteria using a Novel Chemical Screening Approach". The seminar will be held in the Regis and Joan Duffy Research Centre, Lecture Theatre, Room 212.

Chicken Soup for the Soul Fundraiser to support Mental Health Initiatives with Student Affairs

Authors of Chicken Soup for the Soul have the opportunity to support their two favourite charities. Rose Barbour, staff member of UPEI鈥檚 Development and Alumni Engagement and author of a story in Chicken Soup for the Soul: Think Possible, has graciously chosen Student Affairs (Mental Health Initiatives) as one of her charities to support. These books will be on sale at the Bookstore in the W.A. Murphy Student Centre for $15.00 each. Drop by and pick up a book or two 鈥� they make great Christmas Gifts and each purchase will support our Mental Health Initiatives.

Goodbye Ricoh, Hello, Konica-Minolta in November!
Hello from the Printing and Photocopying Working Group鈥�.
 
Our Ricoh contract expires November 30, and the new contract is with Konica-Minolta, so we're going to be doing a pretty fast-paced "fleet" conversion in the next 7 weeks.
 
Dana Sanderson is spearheading this process, which will most definitely include lots of training opportunities.
 
鈥婤eginning Wed October 14, representatives from K-M will be on campus assessing our current Ricoh machines and other printers, so we would appreciate your cooperation with them as they come to your area.鈥�
 
The specific schedule is being worked out soon, so be sure to watch for upcoming messages!
 

Public Presentation/Reception: The Ride Across Canada

The Dean of Arts and the Department of Psychology are teaming up to host a public, community presentation about "The Ride Across Canada," on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 from 4:00 - 5:00 pm in the AVC Lecture Theatre A. The "Ride", a Communities for Veterans Foundation initiative, brings communities together by introducing the faces and stories of over 700 veterans from Victoria to St. John鈥檚 with a horseback ride across Canada.

Please join us on Tuesday and give a warm Island welcome to this organization during their PEI leg of their cross-country journey and as they build awareness about instances of PTSD and mental illness among our veterans. Ride participants will educate us about the Foundation and the work they are committed to doing.

The public presentation will be followed by a reception in the Faculty Lounge, SDU Main Building. All are welcome!
